Medetomidine (MDE) is a potent synthetic sedative and analgesic belonging to the alpha-2 adrenergic agonist class. It is widely used in veterinary medicine to induce deep sedation, muscle relaxation and pain relief in dogs and cats. By stimulating receptors in the central nervous system, it reduces the body's release of norepinephrine, resulting in a calm, sleep-like state and significant cardiovascular depression, such as lowered heart rate. Medetomidine is often employed as a pre-anesthetic or combined with other drugs like k etamine for safe immobilization. Its effects can be quickly reversed using Atipamezole, allowing for rapid recovery.
