The HPIV 1/2/3 Rapid Test (Swab) is a rapid chromatographic immunoassay for the qualitative detection of Human parainfluenza virus (distinction type 1/3, type 2) antigens in human specimens as an aid in the diagnosis of HPIV infection.
Human parainfluenza viruses (HPIVs) are common causes of respiratory illness, particularly in children. They are divided into four types, with distinct clinical patterns. HPIV-1 and HPIV-3 are major causes of croup (laryngo tracheo bronchitis), a harsh, barking cough, HPIV-3 is often associated with more severe disease, including bronchiolitis and pneumonia, especially in infants. In contrast, HPlV-2 most commonly causes croup as well, but it is also frequently linked to acute laryngitis (hoarse voice) in older children and adults. While HPlV-1 and 3 tend to cause lower airway inflammation, HPlV-2's hallmark is often inflammation of the upper airway and voice box, All types are spread through respiratory droplets.
